What is the Health Cost Triangle?

FPO picWithout a plan to reduce healthcare costs caused by chronic conditions, more companies will fall into the ever-widening economic trap of the "Health Cost Triangle." Formed by three key cost drivers working together - an obesity epidemic, an aging baby boomer population and rising healthcare costs from drugs and medical technology - the triangle is gaining in territory and power every day.

As the triangle widens, more jobs are disappearing. Fewer employees are paying more out of pocket for medical expenses. Less people can afford health insurance even if they are employed. That means less discretionary income. Less discretionary income and fewer jobs mean less consumer spending. Less spending means company profits fall. People get laid off. Unemployment escalates. Taxes go up to cover the uninsured. More healthcare and medical companies go bankrupt. People continue to get sicker.

Eventually, everybody in society suffers either directly or indirectly as a result of unaffordable healthcare costs and sinks into the seemingly inescapable Health Cost Triangle.

But there is a way out·

It's called disease management.
